National Awards for Excellence in Agricultural Research in Sri Lanka

A team of researchers led by Prof. P. Abeynayake from Food Safety & Quality Assurance Laboratory of the University of Peradeniya (FSQAL), Sri Lanka was awarded the 1st place in Livestock and Fisheries Sector of the National Awards for Excellence in Agricultural Research 2017 organized by the Sri Lanka Council for Agricultural Research Policy, Ministry of Agriculture. Various State and Private sector laboratories across the country contested for the awards, and their contribution to agricultural research was assessed under several themes. The FSQAL team was awarded the first place in the Livestock and Fisheries sector in recognition of the research on “Establishment of Methods to Ensure Chemical and Microbial Safety of Food of Animal Origin.”

The award can be considered as a testimony to the research contribution provided by FSQAL over nearly two decades to enhance the country’s food safety. Members of FSQAL received the award, certificates and cash prize from Hon. Duminda Dissanayake, Minister of Agriculture at a ceremony held on 14th December 2017 in Colombo.
